What is malware?

April 28, 2025

In this blog post, we explain what malware is and how it sneaks in.

What is malware? The word itself sounds a bit scary, doesn't it? It actually is – but it doesn't have to be as complicated as it sounds.

Malware – what does it really mean?

Malware is a contraction of malicious software, that is, malicious software. It covers a wide range of programs that have one common goal: to cause harm.

This could be by stealing data, locking files, monitoring your activities, or just creating general unrest on your network.

So it's not just something that happens to “big companies.” Malware doesn't care about the size of your company – only how easy it is to get in.

Types of malware – in brief

There are many types of malware, but here are a few of the most common:

  • Virus: Infects files and spreads to other systems.
  • Spyware: Keeps an eye on what you are doing and passes on the information.
  • Ransomware: Locks your files and demands money to release them.
  • Trojan horses: Looks like something harmless, but hides something dangerous.

What they all have in common? They are unwelcome – and often well hidden.

How does malware get in?

This most often happens through:

  • Emails with attachments or links
  • Downloading free programs from unofficial sites
  • Weak passwords
  • Out-of-date software and operating systems

It's not that you click on everything that looks like an offer from a Nigerian prince – sometimes it just takes one unfortunate click.

If you are unsure about how vulnerable your business is, it might be a good idea to have it checked.

Here at MainBrain we scan your systems for vulnerabilities and gives you a clear overview of potential risks – without unnecessary technical talk.

What can you do to protect your business?

You don't have to be an IT expert to protect yourself from malware. Here are some low-tech (but effective) tips:

  • Update your systems and programs regularly
  • Use strong passwords – and change them regularly
  • Have a good antivirus program (and yes, it should be up to date)
  • Avoid opening suspicious emails – and teach your employees the same
  • Take backups! Preferably automatically and regularly

A backup can be what saves the day if malware strikes first. That's why we at MainBrain offer backup solutions that just work – without you having to lift a finger.
